These plans, should they come to fruition, will be hugely damaging for BBC workers, viewers, and communities, severely undermining the BBC’s ability to fulfil its foundational mission to inform, educate, and entertain the public. Audiences would be particularly affected by potentially heavy cuts to BBC News, where management have suggested that cost-saving targets will be closer to 15%.

Charter Renewal offers the hope of a new direction of travel. The NUJ’s ‘Back the BBC’ campaign has called for increased funding, worker representation on the BBC board, and real independent governance.

However, Charter Renewal won’t come soon enough to stave off the impact of these proposed cuts. We need urgent action.

I write as a constituent, worker at the BBC, and member of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) to request your support in protecting jobs and the future of the nation’s public service broadcaster.

In April, BBC management announced plans to cut between 1,800 and 2,000 jobs - about one in 10 - across various departments, representing the biggest round of layoffs in many years. This is in response to the BBC’s target to make a further 10% cut to its total costs by the end of 2028-29. Audiences will be particularly affected by potentially heavy cuts to BBC News, where management have suggested that cost-saving targets will be closer to 15%.

These plans, should they come to fruition, will be hugely damaging for BBC workers, viewers, and communities. Previous rounds of cuts have led to a reduction in valued programming, loss of experience, unmanageable workloads, fewer opportunities and have significantly impacted staff morale.

It’s clear that further cuts will severely undermine the BBC’s ability to fulfil its foundational mission to inform, educate, and entertain the public. The broadcaster simply cannot provide quality journalism - locally, nationally, and internationally - without the talented and experienced workers who make it possible.

The proposals further threaten to diminish our pay and workplace terms and conditions. Our team works very hard to deliver a vital public service and deserves a lot better, as do viewers - who will potentially lose some of the brilliant news and programming they rely on.
